A few of my favorite things:

TOMS. I've already professed my love of the brand, but I'll say it again. Comfy shoes for a great cause. Sign me up! They are having a sample sale a couple hours from here on Saturday and I'm pretty stoked! Making an adventure out of it!

Starbucks. In general, but especially when they bring out festive red holiday cups <3 Waiting for caramel brûlée lattes and fraps.

Shirts found in my mom's closet. Animal print has made a serious comeback. Bonus points for shoulder pads hahaha. Also? Super in love with my gold watch (that I totally broke last week and had to have the crystal replaced. Good as new!).

My husband. Duh. He's so freaking awesome. How did I get so lucky?

My home. It's such a beautiful place. The beach is my happy place.

A couple of things:

Molly got her stitches out today and the vet was very happy with her healing. She doesn't limp on her broken leg anymore and the wounds are healing well. We go back in two weeks for an xray to see the progress. I don't know if I mentioned it, but Molly is crate confined for at least a month. She kind of hates her life, but it's for the best. She was dead silent for a few hours after we got home, which made me laugh. She was so busy grooming herself now that the e-collar is gone. That makes her a little less ticked about life.

On a similar note..if taking two animals to the vet is the equivalent of taking two children to the doctor, I'm SO thankful I only want one child. Dex was in desperate need of a nail trim, so I took him with. Since he can't walk on tile I ended up carrying him. And Molly in the carrier. Which leaves no hands for anything..like you know, opening doors. Hah. Good times!

If you haven't tried iced pumpkin cookies, you haven't LIVED. I think I had like 6 today. Whoops. I'd link the recipe, but I'm on my phone. I got it from allrecipes.com though. They are AMAZING.

I had the most fabulous weekend! We went to our wedding site with dex on Saturday and happened to catch a wedding. We all laid in the park for a couple hours and watched the guests arrive and listened to the beginning of the wedding before we left. It was a gorgeous day, so it was nice to be outside. On Sunday, I met a coworker at the mall and did some damage. I freaking love shopping! Especially when I have someone to shop with.

How on Earth did I not know about Bath and Body Works candles? I actually haven't shopped there in probably 10 years. But these candles? OMG. They are fantastic. Marshmallow Fireside <3. I see more of these in my future.

Anniversary in ONE WEEK. I'm pretty excited, although I may be taking an early midterm that night. We'll celebrate the weekend after. I've got all my gifts ready to go :)

That's about it. Typing on the phone not so fun. Excuse any errors.

Good Golly, Miss Molly

It appears my feisty little kitty has gotten into her first (Hopefully last? Wishful thinking?) big-time scuffle.

Molly never came home for breakfast this morning. She spends her nights coming and going as she pleases, but she always comes home for breakfast. I called her outside for a good ten minutes this morning before I was nearly late for work. I put the pin lock in the back door so she could get in and did one last call for her before I left.

7.10

When I got home, the first thing I noticed was her wet food was still in her dish. I immediately started to tear up thinking she never came home and what was I going to tell Andrew? I called for her and all the sudden she strolled down the hall and laid under the table by the door. She wouldn't come to me when I got down and called her. Strange, but okay.

I still knew something had to be up since she didn't eat her food, but she followed us outside as I took Dex out.

I decided to check her out once we got back in and felt her underside was a little crusty. Then I noticed her limping.

I sent a single word expletive to Andrew before calling the vet and rushing over.

It appears Molly was attacked by another animal. She has three puncture wounds on the outside of her leg, which was also broken. She also had a decent size gash that needed stitching. Presumably one of the neighborhood cats that have been harassing her finally got her, but we'll never know for sure.

My poor kitty :( She will have to be crate confined for a month while she heals, which should be interesting! But hey, we're pros at that by now! Geez, our animals never take it easy on us (or our wallets). I'm glad she's okay though, and I can't wait to bring her back home tomorrow.

Okay, so it’s been over a month! Time is seriously flying by. Going to have to do bullets for this whopper.

-Dexter (the most important, of course): Is doing great! He’s up and walking around like a happy little guy. He’s got the whole “drunken walk” going on, but he’s WALKING. He’s no longer crate-confined, but he still has to be blocked off in a small area for the majority of the day. Admittedly, we’ve been cheating a little bit. When we’re hanging out in the bedroom or kitchen, we kind of let him wander the apartment until he gets too rowdy and starts chasing the cat around. Most of the time he’s fine, though. He loses complete footing on slippery ground, like our kitchen tile, so he’s not allowed in there. He goes for daily walks, and has these orange little balloon “booties” for his back paws, so he doesn’t injure them (he still drags his feet sometimes). We were told to start with five minute walks and work our way up from there. The first day, he was DONE after about one minute. He straight sat down in the middle of the driveway. It was super funny. We also have a list of exercises we are supposed to do twice a day as physical therapy. Not going to lie, we’re failing a little bit on that end. Definitely need to work on that. He had one session of physical therapy at the vet’s office where he worked on the WATER TREADMILL. Honestly, they have that for dogs? I wish we were allowed back in that area to watch! That’s about it, though. He will continue to heal and should be walking pretty normal in the next month or so, but they say it can take up to a year to fully recover. Sooooo happy he’s walking, though.

-We moved into the most fabulous little bungalow/cottage. I love, love, love it! It’s got character and charm and is darling. We’ve definitely made it home (just need to get our photos on the walls!).

-Started school again. I’m taking four courses this semester (two are 8 week courses, so it’s really more like 3 courses at a time). I’m in class Tuesday through Thursday. It’s exhausting, but not terrible. My Thursday course starts at 5:00 p.m..you know, the time I get OFF work. They don’t bother to tell you that until the first day of class. When you register for the course, it says it starts at 7:00 p.m. What they don’t tell you, is client interviews start at 5:00. Fortunately, you can be a little late, just have to make up your hours. It’s actually a really interesting course, interviewing real clients. Anyway, I’ll still have two more semesters after this one, but I’m hoping it all goes by quickly and before I know it, I’ll be a paralegal.

-Husband left me for a business trip on Sunday. The first time we’ve slept in separate beds since the day before our wedding. I’ve been pretty darn lucky. That’s almost a year without a business trip! He’s usually gone every few months. I’m not complaining. I’ve got my mama staying with me, so I won’t be lonely. She’s cooking me dinner and taking care of my pup. Love it!

-Our first anniversary is a little over a month away! The year has flown by. I don’t really feel like much changed after getting married, but I’m definitely happy with the little life we’ve built. I couldn’t imagine a better partner to spend my life with. We don’t have any plans set in stone yet. We originally wanted to go to Vegas and see another Cirque show, but with the whole Dex situation, we won’t be able to go unless my mama can come over and watch him. We are also considering a small overnight trip to Big Bear or Santa Barbara. We’ll see. We may end up just going out to dinner..who knows! I REALLY need to get working on my gift though. First anniversary = paper. I think that’s a pretty easy one!

Some days.

Ya know, some days are better than others. Some days I can push aside my pessimistic tendencies and see the good for what it is. Today is one of those days. Dexter is standing, regularly!! He's still very wobbly and falls down, but he's showing sooo much improvement. I'm now more confident than ever that he will walk again.

If you'd have asked me last weekend if I thought he'd walk again, I'd have been hesitant to say yes. He had stood a handful of times, but he was standing on his back legs the wrong way (think dragging his feet behind him). I was so discouraged. But our little fighter WANTS this and darn it, he's going to achieve it. It may take a while to get a good strong walk back, but it'll happen. I KNOW IT.

Dex Update

We finally got to bring Dex home last night! If you’re counting, that’s four nights away from home. Probably the worst weekend, ever.

He’s alive and happy and super excited to be home. He’s still not walking, but they say he’s healing as expected and should be walking in the next couple weeks. He’s got some leg movement and his tail wags like crazy, all good signs. The neurologist pulled up his x-rays for us yesterday and it was crazy to see such a clear spinal cord and then BAM no spinal cord outline at all. Apparently that’s where he was all messed up. The neurologist also went over aftercare, which is crucial to his healing. Three weeks strict confinement to his crate. We were told we can hold him while we’re home, but otherwise he needs to be in the crate. The problem is..he always wants to move! I was expecting him to be a little more sedated, but noooo, not this little guy. He’s not really interested in just laying on my lap, so it makes it difficult to let him out of the crate. And when he’s in it, he wants OUT. Ah well, we’ll deal with it because I’d be kind of devastated if my dog never walked again. I mean, we’ve definitely looked at a set of wheels if necessary, but I’m really keeping my fingers crossed for him to start walking again. He’s also on a couple meds and needs to pee all.the.time. Fortunately, my mom is staying with us to take care of him for the next few weeks. Very thankful she is able to do this because I’d be really freaking upset if he had to be alone all day every day.

If you’re curious what exactly happened and what his condition is..I found a really good website. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (http://www.acvs.org/AnimalOwners/HealthConditions/SmallAnimalTopics/IntervertebralDiscDisease/) gives a good explanation of his disease: Intervertebral Disc Disease. We didn’t know he had this until yesterday, but apparently it is very common in the dwarf breeds of dogs, dachshunds being the worst.

So what happened was Dex had a disc that ruptured. The rupture impacts the spinal cord, which causes the paralysis. According to the website:

“Most intervertebral disc ruptures are a combination of compressive and concussive forces that lead to the rapid degeneration of nervous tissue in the spinal cord. The type of force, the degree of force applied to the spinal cord, and the duration that the force was applied will determine the extent of the damage and the loss of neurologic function.

Conscious proprioception is the ability to know where limbs are without seeing them. The neurons that control this are superficial on the spinal cord and relatively minor damage to these can lead to loss of coordination and a "drunken sailor" ataxic gait. Deeper within the spinal cord are the motor tracts that control coordinated movement of the limbs, including walking. More significant damage leads to loss of walking and potentially loss of motor function. Deeper still within the spinal cord are the neurons that control pain perception. Severe damage can lead to entire loss of pain sensation. This can carry a very poor prognosis for recovery depending on the duration that pain perception has been lost.”

So Dex had loss of coordination, which in eight hours lead to loss of motor function. He never lost pain perception, which is definitely good and gives him a MUCH higher probability of being able to walk again. Every day the neurologist would tell us “he has good pain perception” and I never understood what it actually meant, all I knew was it was a good thing.

The website says the cause of this is:

“The majority of intervertebral disc ruptures occur in chondrodystrophic breeds (tiny breed dogs like Dachshunds, Lhasa apsos, Pekinese, beagle, etc.). These breeds undergo an early type of disc degeneration (chondroid metaplasia) that leads to early mineralization of these discs and predisposes the disc to mechanical failure under traumatic and normal forces.”

I was so confused as to why my dog was walking one minute, wobbly an hour later, and not walking at all eight hours later. The neurologist said it happens fast and anything can cause it. It could be from him jumping off the bed to him just walking.

According to the website, Dexter’s prognosis is decreased if motor function is absent at the time of surgery, but much better than if he had lost pain perception as well:

“Prognosis varies significantly with the degree of injury and the location of the injury. Most intervertebral disc ruptures that present in dogs that are still walking or have motor function have an excellent chance to return to walking and normal or near normal function. Prognosis for return to good function is decreased if motor function is absent at the time of surgery. Return to function if deep pain perception is absent can be unlikely if the duration of insult has been prolonged. Some dogs treated for intervertebral disc rupture will have some degree of wobbliness while walking.”

The neurologist thinks that Dex has a 90% chance of walking again, so I’m going to try and be optimistic.

Weekend/25

I seem to have a much greater appreciation for the weekends now that I’m working again. It seems like every weekend feels like the GREATEST! WEEKEND! EVER! It’s kind of nice, but what’s up with that?

Which means last weekend was fabulous. Friday we had some friends over for a BBQ in attempt to get rid of all the leftover food we had from the 4th. It was really nice catching up with my BFF. Saturday found us lounging in GM & GP's pool for the afternoon. Seriously, my happy place is floating on a raft in the pool. Don’t bother me, I’m sleeping. After we got home and cleaned up we headed out to dinner for pizza with a groupon I bought. It’s just like free food! Nevermind the fact that you paid for the coupon. Looove it. Then we went to the movies on another groupon-like coupon! Saw Horrible Bosses, which was funny. Wasn’t outstanding or anything like that, but it was funny. I really wanted to see Larry Crowne, but the timing didn’t work out. Sunday we found ourselves back at the pool floating around. We also stayed to play trivial pursuit with my grandparents. Dude. We suck at that game. My grandparents whooped us! We also spent some time organizing around the house. I convinced the mister to hang a belt rack/hook thing and a towel rack I’m using for my bracelets and necklaces. I also cleaned out the hall closet and everything is pretty again. There’s something about organizing, even just a little bit, that makes me feel so productive. And I really love the new hooks for my bracelets and necklaces. Much needed and I think it looks really nice next to my vanity table.

This week is going well and we’ve already started making plans for the coming weekend. We’re going to golf a new (to me) course and then have lunch at my favorite restaurant. I’m pretty excited already.

And because everything is better with pictures, here’s some of my birthday gifts! I may have turned the big 2-5 on July 1st. My husband seriously spoiled me. Not only did we go up to Northern California, but he also got me lots of gifts!

Candles!

TOMS wedges from my mama!

LOVE my new watch!

Date night birthday celebration! Um..also..the restaurant gave me a happy birthday BALLOON. Along with complimentary crème brulee. Clearly they know how to win my heart.

And PS..turning 25 got me a whopping 26 cent discount on my auto insurance every month. Thanks, State Farm! I thought 25 was a big deal?

A couple weeks ago we took a little road trip to Scottsdale, Arizona. A friend of mine was attempting to get her man back and we decided we were up for the ride! We stayed at Kimpton’s Firesky Resort and it was AMAZING. They treated us soo well there. Plus, they accept dogs (with no fee!!!), so we got to bring Dex along. We didn’t take many photos, but here’s what I’ve got:

I felt so bad for Dex, he was panting the whole way there. Even with the air conditioning turned all the way up, the sun was still beating down and it was WARM.

Arizona!

This is my friend’s dog, Charlie. He was cuddling up with Andrew the whole way. It was super cute!

Upon checking in, they had a little sign with all the names of the dogs who were checking in that day. I loved that!

One of the cool things about Kimpton hotels is you can request a goldfish in your room. We named this little guy Scotty.

Unfortunately, that’s all I’ve got for our stay in Scottsdale. We were only there about 24 hours and didn’t get to do very much because Dex was being particularly barky.

Other than that, we’ve been trying to spend as much time in the sunshine as possible! Last weekend we managed to make it to the beach both Saturday and Sunday. I’m so thankful we live so close to the beach. I love that we can go for an hour and then go on with our day!

Beautiful day!

I’m loving my new job and I really feel like this is where I’m supposed to be. Things are SO different from my last job and they are ALL good things! With the exception of one person who everyone could do without, it really is the perfect environment. Everyone is so laid back and stress level of the job is nothing compared to where I came from. It kind of makes me glad I was laid off. I got to have a few months to play and have fun and then I was lucky enough to get this amazing opportunity.

Yay/Nay Thursday

**YAY**
-Our sweet and sassy kitty, Molly turned ONE today! Happy birthday, little kitty!
-Tomorrow is Friday, which is ALMOST the weekend. Seriously need this weekend, which is kind of funny since I don't have a job haha. This week has been rough.
-New blush, eyeshadow, and nail polish! I spent my last two week's allowance on makeup haha!
-3 interviews this week. At least they see potential on paper?

**NAY**
-Job searching. Seriously. Tired. Of. It. Ugh.
-Not getting a rejection call or email. Employers: take note. It really sucks to be left hanging.
-3 interviews this week on a different day each. Need to get better at scheduling.
-Calling for rain today and tomorrow. Boooo. Where'd my sunshine go?

Seattle - Day 2

Saturday morning I was on a MISSION to get donuts from Daily Dozen Doughnut Company. There were all kinds of crazy good reviews on Yelp (yes, I yelp EVERYTHING) and I knew we HAD to try these. We seemed to have walked up and down Pike Place Market twice and couldn’t find these freaking donuts. I was so frustrated I might have thrown a mini-fit. Once Andrew took charge, all was well and he led me to paradise. Or something like that. He found me donuts and I was a happy, happy girl. Seriously, go to Seattle and get these donuts. We may or may not have bought three dozen during our whole four day trip. May or may not. Who knows.

Daily Dozen Doughnut Company

Daily Dozen

We spent the rest of the morning walking around Pike Place. We watched the fish throwing, found some other good eats, and searched for the gum wall (which we never found, and honestly, I’m not all that devastated about it).

Lovebirds in Seattle

Up until this point, I had only been wearing one pair of shoes. I only brought the shoes on my feet, so I really had no other option. My suitcase was the size of a shoebox, so there wasn’t really much room for anything. The shoes I was wearing were pretty comfortable boots, but they were only comfy for so long. They weren’t exactly hill climbing shoes by any means. Or street walking for 12 hours a day kind of shoes. So my feet kind of hurt. A lot. I decided we should go purchase some new shoes and oh what about those TOMS shoes that donate a pair to a country in need? Those sound cool. So I googled where to find them and all the sudden we were shopping in the Nordstrom flagship store. Um, amazing. I have never seen such a large shoe department in my whole life. I almost walked out because it was too overwhelming and there was NO WAY I was going to decide on one pair of shoes. Fortunately, Andrew had taken a seat and was patiently waiting, so I had time. And lucky for me, I happened to see a girl try on black glitter TOMS and was SOLD. Had to have those. The nice man helping me was also wearing TOMS and all the sudden Andrew had decided he wanted a pair as well. And that’s how we ended up with his and hers TOMS. We’re so disgusting, I know.

His / Hers TOMS

I kind of love them a lot.

Glitter TOMS

When we got back to our room we were greeted by this little guy. We named him Tom. In honor of the shoes. I had read online that you can request a fish in your room, so before we headed out I asked for one. Such a neat touch!

Tom the Goldfish!

Not much else happened Saturday. We had dinner at a really good restaurant, Palomino. We caught happy hour, which was fantastic! After dinner we retreated to the hotel, where I’m pretty sure there was more iPhone poker playing.

Whine!

I have no idea what I was thinking when I said I actually ENJOY interviews. I'm SO burnt out. I just want this to be over. I want to be working! I'm not sure how many more interviews I can handle, so PLEASE universe, give me a job!

Three interviews scheduled this week. Two down, one to go.

I think they went well, but I always do. And I haven't landed a job yet, so how good are they really?

I know, I just need to be thankful for getting this many interviews. Working on that.

Enough whining, back to Seattle posts tomorrow.

Seattle - Day 1

Our adventure to Seattle started Friday morning with taking a cab to the airport. Seriously, how do people take cabs anywhere? The stupid meter thing is wayyy to stressful for me to ever want to take a cab again haha. Fortunately, we only live a couple miles from the airport (if that), so I knew it wouldn’t cost a fortune. But if I were going a far distance, I’m not sure I could handle taking a cab. I felt so adult, though. I’ve never taken a cab with anyone other than my mom before, so this was big time!

When we got to the airport, Andrew made a quick stop at airport store for a couple things. I waited outside the store with our luggage and was definitely convinced there was a hidden Candid Camera somewhere. There was this little bear on the floor and every time someone walked by, it would start rolling around the ground and making all kinds of noises. I was just standing there watching all these people walk by and trip out over this stuffed animal. I was CRYING I was laughing so hard. I felt like such a goof.

The flight to Seattle was pretty uneventful, although towards the end of the flight my ear pressure was all out of whack and I was in tears it was so painful. Not sure what that was all about. Definitely has not happened before.

Light Rail

We took the light rail system to downtown Seattle and our first experience when we got there was walking up a MASSIVE hill to the hotel. I had read online about the hills, so I was semi-prepared. This poor girl who was walking up next to us was having the worst of times with her suitcase, though. Andrew offered to trade, but she declined.

As soon as we dropped our suitcases off in our room at Hotel Vintage Park we were off to find some lunch. We stumbled upon this place called MOD Super Fast Pizza. It’s a genius concept and I sooo wish I had thought of it! Every pizza is $6.28 and you can add any toppings you want. The pizzas are personal size and perfect for a meal. Every pizza is made to order, so you get a nice fresh pizza.

Mod Super Fast Pizza

When we checked into the hotel, they gave us an amazing map of the whole downtown area. One place on the map that I had not heard of was the Columbia Center building. It is the tallest building in Seattle and they have a Skyview viewing area on the 74th floor. I looked it up on Yelp (of course) and all the reviews said it was better than the Space Needle—less crowded, and definitely much cheaper. $5 for adults, $3 for students. And bonus to the nice gentleman who gave me student pricing, even though I didn’t have my ID.

Columbia Skyview

We were fortunate enough to find out about it just in time to go up. They are only open M-F 8-4 or something like that because it is an office building. Lucky for us it was a GORGEOUS day and we got some great photos! The view was amazing. We looked down on the Space Needle, over the sports fields, got a great view of the water. After such a fantastic views, we decided we didn’t even need to go visit the Space Needle.

We also found a Starbucks on the 40-something-th floor of the Columbia building, so we stopped there for a few to relax and have a drink. (And try the new cake pops! A+)

We then decided that since it was such a beautiful day, we should probably take the Bainbridge Ferry to get some good photos of the Seattle skyline. We were pretty exhausted, so we decided not to get off and explore Bainbridge Island, but just took the ferry back to Seattle. The views were definitely worth the ride!

Seattle Skyline

After the ferry, we found some dinner and then retreated to the hotel to lay in bed and play poker on our iPhones against each other (we did a lot of this).

Job talk

Is it kind of sick that I actually enjoy looking for a job? It's kind an ego boost for me. Which is stupid, because I haven't even been offered a job that I really WANT yet. But seriously, I think I interview really well.

The telephone interview this morning was fantastic. I'm pretty sure she loved me and I'd be shocked if I didn't get an interview with the actual office I'd be working at. The woman I telephone interviewed with virtually manages the local office I'd be working at all the way from New York. She said she's been to the office here and it is beautiful and overlooks the ocean. Heck yeah! Anyway, I just got an email from her thanking me for sending my references/letter of recommendation and to stay tuned. She also said if I get an offer before she gets back to me to let her know. Definitely a good sign!

I haven't called the other attorney back about the current job offer. Kind of dreading it. I really don't know what to say. Or I do, but I just don't want to haha. I really just need to turn it down for good.

Anyway, entry about Seattle soon! Ahhh, loved it!
